Talladega Nights Races First

The Will Ferrell NASCAR comedy, TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY, raced to the top of the box office chart in its first outing. For the weekend ended Aug. 6, 2006, the Sony release scored a whopping $47Mthe best comedy opener of the year and a personal best for Ferrell. Debuting in second place with $15.8M was the 3D-animated BARNYARD from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and director Steve Oedekerks O Ent. Dropping to third was Disneys PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANS CHEST (with vfx support from ILM), which still hauled in $11M for a record-breaking booty of $379.6M. Slipping from first to fifth was Universal's MIAMI VICE (vfx by EntityFX, Illusion Arts and Eden FX), which added a second week take of $10.2M, giving it a cume of $46.2M. Lionsgates shocker THE DESCENT debuted in the fifth spot with $8.9M. Foxs comedy, JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE claimed sixth place with $6.1M and a two-week cume of $28.7M. Sonys all-CG MONSTER HOUSE (by way of Sony Pictures Imageworks) followed in seventh with $6M and a three-week cume of $57M. Warner Bros. 3D-animated THE ANT BULLY settled for eighth with $3.8M and a disappointing cume of $18.1M in its second outing. Universals YOU, ME AND DUPREE sat in ninth place with $3.6M and a cume of $66.8M. Miramaxs THE NIGHT LISTENER bowed in 10th with $3.5M. Box office information obtained from boxofficemojo.com.
