Walt Disney Studios has moved Tim Burton's FRANKENWEENIE away from Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS and pitted Andrew Stanton's JOHN CARTER OF MARS against it instead, reports Deadline.com. PROMETHEUS is Ridley's original sci-fi film that was originally planned as an ALIEN prequel that he's building with LOST creator Damon Lindelof. Last week, Fox announced it would release the film on March 9, 2012, which was the release date for FRANKENWEENIE, which will now hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2012. Now March 9th is shaping up to be a battle for sci-fi tentpoles.

JOHN CARTER OF MARS is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' PRINCESS OF MARS, which transports a Civil War vet to Mars where he encounters the strange alien races living there. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Polly Walker, Dominic West, Ciaran Hinds, Thomas Haden Church and Samantha Morton.

FRANKENWEENIE is the stop-motion remake of Burton's live-action short film, which sees a boy reanimate his dog after it is run over by a car.
