Press Release from IMAX Corporation
LOS ANGELES, April 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - Paramount Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that STAR TREK, directed by J.J. Abrams (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III, LOST and ALIAS), will open for a special, limited two-week run in 134 IMAX(R) theatres domestically, concurrently with the wide release on Thursday, May 7 at 7 pm. The film will also open in 29 IMAX theatres internationally. STAR TREK has been digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience(R) with proprietary IMAX DMR(R) (Digital Re-mastering) technology.
The film has already received strong reviews, and IMAX theatres are adding midnight shows to meet the demand during the limited run.
"STAR TREK is a fantastic addition to our 2009 film slate, and we're pleased that the continuing rollout of digital IMAX theatre systems made this limited release possible," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "This film combines top Hollywood story-telling talent with space exploration, which is a perfect combination for The IMAX Experience."
"J.J. Abrams' extraordinary vision and IMAX's DNA has created a powerful combination that is generating strong pre-sales and incredible buzz as fans worldwide anticipate its release," added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "Both STAR TREK and IMAX take audiences to far away places they would normally not be able to go, and Paramount Pictures has done an excellent job making it possible for these two great brands to come together. We're already seeing feverish interest from the young tech-savvy crowd in addition to the millions of Trekkies worldwide."
The greatest adventure of all time begins with STAR TREK, the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created: the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind.
The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before!
