Star Blazers Anime Going Live-Action

Benderspink and producer Josh C. Kline are set to adapt the classic Japanese anime STAR BLAZERS into a live-action feature, according to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Known as SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO in Japan, the 1970s franchise spun off three television series, five animated features and a host of merchandise. Voyager Ent. brought the series to the U.S. in the early 1980s.

The tale is set in the 22nd century after an alien attack on Earth forces survivors to live in underground cities. After a message arrives from a distant planet promising a cure for the surface radiation, the crew of a powerful yet untested spaceship must venture out into space to save Earth.

Previously, a live-action adaptation was set up at Walt Disney Studios in the 1990s.

Benderspink is looking for a writer. JC Spink, Chris Bender and Kline will produce, with Benderspink's Brian Spink co-producing.
