Sony Pictures Consumer Products Catches Big Licensing Wave For Surf’s Up

Sony Pictures Consumer Products (SPCP) announces a sea of licensing opportunities for SURFS UP, the second animated feature film from Sony Pictures Animation, scheduled for release in summer 2007.

SURFS UP goes behind the scenes of the hang-10 world of competitive penguin surfing. The film profiles Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf), an up-and-coming surfer, in his first pro competition. Inspired by his hero, a legendary wave rider, Big Z, Cody leaves his family and his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica, to travel to the tropical island of Pen-Gu for the Big Z Memorial Surf Contest. Cody thinks winning will bring him the admiration and respect, but when he unexpectedly comes face to face with a washed up old surfer, The Geek (voiced by Jeff Bridges), Cody begins to understand that the greatest champion isnt always the one who comes in first.

SURFS UP also features the voices of Zooey Deschanel, James Woods, Jon Heder, Diedrich Bader and Mario Cantone. The film is directed by Ash Brannon (TOY STORY 2) and Chris Buck (TARZAN) and produced by Chris Jenkins.

SURFS UP takes a fascinating view into how penguins are the true originators of surfing, providing us with a unique and creative angle for our licensing program, stated Juli Boylan, svp of licensing, SPCP.

The merchandising program will project the surf culture through edgy graphics, stylized line art and a design palette of vibrant colors that reflect the tropical vibe of the film. Sony Pictures Consumer Products is licensing across all key product categories.
