Silverwing Scores Gemini Nod

Vancouver-based composers Ari Wise and Brian Carson garnered a Gemini nomination for Best Original Music Score for a Dramatic Series for Bardel Ent.s SILVERWING series. Wise and Carson won the 2003 Leo Award and a 2003 Gemini nomination for Best Musical Score for an animated program for Bardels holiday special THE CHRISTMAS ORANGE.

Ari and Brian are extremely talented and have been wonderful to work with, said Delna Bhesania, Bardels ceo/creative producer of SILVERWING. They always bring something unique to the table and are very open to try something new. This was especially important for the musical score in SILVERWING series because we wanted it to sound more like a feature film.

Scoring for a dramatic series can easily be reduced to a series of transitions from scene to scene with the odd low note thrown in here and there to punctuate a point, explains Carson. This was not the case with the SILVERWING series for Bardel and TELETOON. We found that we shared certain sensibilities in relation to the treatment of the music.

Based on the characters from Kenneth Oppels youth novels SILVERWING, SUNWING and FIREWING, the series and movie trilogy follows the adventures of a bat named Shade and his colony of Silverwings. Shade is a runt who tries to prove himself by challenging the ancient law that condemned bats to darkness.

The 19th Annual Gemini Awards will be presented from the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and broadcast on CBC Television, Dec. 13, 2004 beginning at 8:00 pm. A full list of nominees can be found at www.geminiawards.ca/gemini19/gem19Galanoms.cfm.
