Shrek Wins Big At This Year’s Annie Awards

On November 10, 2001 at a gala ceremony hosted by voice actor BillyWest, the 29th Annual Annie Awards were presented. The big winnerwas SHREK, which took home eight Annie's including outstandingtheatrical feature and outstanding directing for an animated feature.THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE nabbed three awards, for femaleperformer in an animated feature (Eartha Kitt as Yzma), best song andoutstanding individual character animation. In television, once againTHE SIMPSONS took home the award for outstanding primetime show.When picking up the award, a representative from THE SIMPSONS gotpolitical, mentioning the Nickelodeon writers' struggle for WGA unionrepresentation in his acceptance speech. Many in the audience sported yellow WGA lapel buttons -- but the show's overall mood was far from serious as the presenters kept the show moving at a fast and humorous clip. Matt Groening's othercreation, FUTURAMA, took home awards for outstanding maleperformer in an animated television production and outstandingwriting. Independent animation studio Wild Brain received awards for animatedshort subject and outstanding animated production for the Internet.Below is a complete list of winners.
