Sheridan Hosts Top Studios For Opening Of New Animation Center

Execs from some of the top animation and digital media studios in North America were on hand April 26, 2007, to officially open Sheridan Institute's new center for animation. The multi-million dollar facility is the latest milestone in Sheridan's 35-year history as a leading animation educator in Canada. Reps from Nelvana/Corus Ent., Disney DreamWorks Animation, CORE Digital Pictures, JibJab and many other studios were on hand for the official opening of the center.

"The Sheridan Animation Centre is a fantastic addition to the animation programs at Sheridan," said Robert Turner, president, Sheridan Institute. "But, we're most proud of what the students who'll use this center will be able to achieve. It's going to give them an outstanding environment in which to learn and put their creativity front and center."

It was designed in consultation with faculty and industry experts with an emphasis on promoting both individual and group learning. The result is a facility that complements the specialized needs of both classical and digital animation.

"The Centre will inspire innovative thinking and provide an atmosphere to nurture new talent," said Angela Stukator, associate dean, Sheridan Institute. "Students will enjoy working with the latest in technology and software, but will also be grounded in the art and craft of animation. The Sheridan Animation Centre will allow students to really stretch their abilities and learn about animation and production in a realistic, state-of-the-art setting."

The 37,000-square-foot facility will house 450 students each year from Canada and abroad. It features multiple studios for production work, a new digital stop-motion animation facility, a myriad of classrooms and drafting studios, as well as a powerful rendering farm.

Sheridan (www.sheridanc.on.ca), located in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, produces dozens of animators each year who go on to be the talent behind some of Canada's most successful animation and digital media companies, and Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. It is home to Canada's only degree program in animation and is ranked among the top animation schools in North America. Sheridan animation graduates have been nominated for Academy Awards six times and won twice. The Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning is one of Canada's premier polytechnic institutes and the third-largest school of arts in the world.
