SCAD Students Win Silver Cube at 2015 ADC Awards

Savannah College of Art and Design student collaboration recognized with Silver Cube at the 94th annual ADC Awards honoring the Art + Craft in Advertising and Design.

SAVANNAH, GA -- Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students Yeojin Shin (B.F.A., motion media) and Daniel Uribe (B.F.A., motion media) and alumnus Peter Clark (B.F.A., graphic design, motion media, 2014) received a Silver Cube in the motion category of the 94th Annual ADC Awards Wednesday night for their motion media animation entitled Memory Stream. The ADC Annual Awards of Art + Craft in Advertising and Design is the oldest continuously running industry award show in the world. The recognition event is part of the ADC Festival of Art & Craft in Advertising and Design in Miami Beach.

Previously recognized with the 2014 Adobe Design Achievement Award in the Motion Graphics category, Memory Stream explores the idea of how we as human beings store memories in digital space and how those individual experiences are accessed from the past. The student team chose to focus its animation on aspects of digitally stored memories and how sharing those memories creates a beautiful global culture. The title pulls from the term “file streaming” and implies the format in which we experience memories online.

The students set out to utilize a combination of techniques that they had never done before, as well as familiar techniques like frame-by-frame animation. The primary techniques involved stop motion photography, claymation, laser step printing, frame-by-frame animation, hand-drawn film animation, glitch, 3D animation, 2D animation, 2.5D compositing, live action compositing and projection-re-photography.

In addition to her work with Uribe and Clark, Shin submitted 7 Facts about Chicken for judging consideration, and was awarded a Bronze Cube in the motion category.

“The work being honored by ADC reflects the exceptional caliber of these students’ talent and is undoubtedly deserving of recognition at the longest continually running industry awards show in the world,” said Tina O’Hailey, dean, school of digital media at SCAD. “The SCAD experience is an interdisciplinary creative exploration, which allows students to explore different mediums, techniques, influences and academic disciplines that will best prepare them for a successful and rewarding career in the ever-growing field of digital media.”

Now in its 94th year, the ADC Awards celebrate the very best in advertising, digital media, graphic and publication design, packaging, motion, photography and illustration, all with a focus on artistry and craftsmanship. Highly respected juries select outstanding entrants to be honored with coveted Gold, Silver and Bronze Cubes. Beyond these Cubes, however, ADC Annual Awards winners join a rich legacy of past honorees that include some of the most influential artists of the past century.
