Variety reports that the famed Russian state animation studio Soyuzmultfilm has written an open letter to Russia's prime minister Vladimir Putin requesting funds in order to survive. The studio needs $10 million over the next eight years in order to modernize. Putin has promised to investigate the situation.

The Russian state have funded up to 70% of the budgets for 20 animated films over the past eight years. However, the total amount of investment has dropped from $10 million to $7 million in the past few years.

An example of the success of Russian animated features is Nashe Knio's HOW NOT TO RESCUE A PRINCESS, which has grossed $20 million this summer domestically. That puts it around the same level as international hit KUNG FU PANDA 2, which earned $29 million in Russia.

Soyuzmultfilm is best known for producing such films as THE SNOW QUEEN, THE GOLDEN ANTELOPE and THE ADVENTURES OF BURATINO.
