Producers Guild Adds Animated Film Producer of the Year Category

The Producers Guild of America has expanded the annual PGA Awards to include a seventh competitive category Producer of the Year in Animated Film. The PGA defines an animated feature film is defined as a motion picture created using a frame-by-frame technique of at least 70 minutes in running time with a significant number of the major characters animated, and in which animation figures in no less than 75% of the picture's running time.

The recent renaissance in animated features has been one of our industry's greatest success stories of the past decade, and we feel it's only appropriate that the Producers Guild follow in the steps of the Motion Picture Academy by recognizing the remarkable quality of these productions with their own competitive category, said PGA Awards co-chair, Bruce Cohen. Feature animation presents a unique set of challenges for even the most skilled producer, and the PGA is proud to recognize the immensely talented practitioners of this form through its new Producer of the Year in Animated Film category.

Deadline for submission is Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005. Animated feature films that meet the above mentioned qualifications are not eligible to win the Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Picture. Animated features that have already been submitted for the Zanuck Award will be moved to the new category by the PGA Awards Committee.

PGA will announce the nominees on Jan. 4 in Animated Film, as well as Producer of the Year in Theatrical Motion Picture, Episodic Television-Drama, Episodic Television-Comedy, Long-Form Variety and Non-Fiction Television.

The awards ceremony will take place on Jan. 22 at the Universal Hilton, in Universal City, California.
