Pratt Upload 2014 to Explore Digital Arts

Free public festival in Brooklyn includes keynote address by Marisa Olson, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, and a multi-media after-party.

Pratt Institute’s Department of Digital Arts will host a daylong festival, “Pratt Upload: Meme, You, and Everyone We Follow,” that will include a series of free panel discussions with artists, curators, and writers working in new media and digital arts; workshops on art and technology; and a keynote address by Marisa Olson. By spanning the categories of animation, cyborg cultures, memes, and performance, Pratt Upload will engage participants in a productive and broad debate about the impact and relevance of digital culture.

The Digital Arts Gallery exhibition Local Area Network will showcase contemporary digital arts in Brooklyn, featuring work from American Medium, Eyebeam, Interstate Projects, Microscope Gallery, Transfer Gallery, and NURTUREArt–Videorover. Featured artists include Daniel Levya, Kareem Lofty, Kevvy Metal, Adam Douglas Thompson, and Giselle Zatonyl.

A graduate exhibition titled The Darkweb will feature work from across the Pratt campus, and explore the effect of memes and hashtags on pop culture and society.

Marisa Olson is an artist, writer, and new media theorist who has served as editor and curator at Rhizome and as inaugural curator of Zero1. She is currently an artist-in-residence at Eyebeam. Olson’s work combines performance, video, net art, sound, drawing, and installation to address the cultural history of technology, pop culture, and the aesthetics of failure. Her work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Sundance Film Festival, and the Museum of Modern Art.
