Poseidon Remake Sinks Its Leads

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced the lead actors for Wolfgang Petersen's tentpole remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Signed cast members include Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) and Mike Vogel (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE remake). Andre Braugher (TV's HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET) is in negotiations to join the cast.

Like the 1972 film, the story tracks the survivors of the S.S. Poseidon, a cruise ship capsized by a tidal wave. The survivors must work their way to the surface of the upside down ship through the hull.

Russell will play an ex-fireman and mayor who is traveling with his daughter (Rossum) and her boyfriend (Vogel). Dreyfuss plays a gay man whose relationship breaks up just before departure. Braugher would play the ship's captain.

Petersen is producing with Mike Fleiss and Duncan Henderson. Jon Jashni, Kevin Burns and Sheila Allen are exec producers. Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wrote the screenplay based on Paul Gallico's novel. Boyd Shermis will serve as vfx supervisor.

The film will start shooting on the Warner lot June 18.
