Portugal’s Cinanima Fest Issues 2016 Call for Submissions

Fortieth Anniversary edition of Portugal's international animation festival runs November 7-13; deadline for entries is July 10.

International animation festival Cinanima is now accepting submissions for its 40th Anniversary edition, to be held November 7-13, 2016 in Espinho, Portugal.

The Oscar-qualifying festival is recognized by international film association ASIFA, and is one of the partner festivals of CARTOON, making Cinanima winners eligible to compete for both the Cartoon D’Or for the Best European Animation Short Film and the Academy Award for Best Animation Short Film.

Films can use the full range of animation techniques as defined by ASIFA: “The art of animation involves the creation of animated images using various techniques other than live action.” Films can also include live-action material as long as the project is comprised of at least 70 percent animation.

Films finished after January 1, 2015, and which have not been presented for selection in previous editions of the festival, are eligible for submission. Feature films submissions must run longer than 50 minutes. Short films will be accepted into the international competition in the following categories:

  • A - up to five minutes
  • B - more than five, up to 24 minutes
  • C - more than 24, up to 50 minutes
  • D - Graduation and/or School Film
  • E - Commissioned Films -- Commercials and Information
  • F - Animated Documentary
