Pixar’s Ronnie del Carmen to Deliver Keynote at SIGGRAPH Asia 2015

SIGGRAPH Asia 2015, the Asian edition of the world’s most influential conference on computer graphics, takes place November 2-5 at the Kobe Convention Centre in Kobe, Japan. Set to draw more than 7,000 participants from more than 50 countries, this year’s edition presents a full schedule of speakers, panels, talks and demonstrations.

Leading the lineup of Keynote Speakers at SIGGRAPH Asia 2015 is Ronnie del Carmen from Pixar Animation Studios. Del Carmen joined Pixar in 2000, and has been a member of the story team on a number of the studio’s feature films including the Academy Award-winning features Finding Nemo, Ratatouille and Up (on which he served as story supervisor). In his keynote, del Carmen will take SIGGRAPH Asia attendees through his animation journey as the co-director of Pixar’s Inside Out.

Del Carmen is joined by Satoshi Tadokoro, president of the International Rescue Institute and a project manager at the Japan Cabinet Office ImPACT project. Tadokoro will be sharing his experiences from the devastating Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, in which experimental robotics technology was used for disaster response and recovery.

Leading the keynote at the Symposium on Visualization in High Performance Computing will be Kwan-Liu Ma, a professor of computer science and the chair of the Graduate Group in Computer Science (GGCS) at the University of California-Davis, who will discuss visualization in science, storytelling and analytics.

Joining Kwan-Liu Ma is 3D designer and SIGGRAPH 2015 Computer Animation Festival Award winner Hirofumi Seo, CEO & president at SCIEMENT, Inc., who will talk about how 3D animation can open doors for anything from medicine to science.

The special opening premiere for the Computer Animation Festival’s Electronic Theater will feature Daito Manabe, well known for his works pursuing possibilities of relationship and technology by interacting with a variety of hardware and devices.

They keynote speaker for the Symposium of Education, Dr. Joaquim Jorge, is an esteemed academic and is currently a Professor of Computer Graphics and Multimedia at the Departamento de Engenharia Informática do Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade de Lisboa is Lisbon, Portugal.

For the first time this year, SIGGRAPH Asia is hosting seasoned professionals within the industry with a Pioneers Panel, in which three industry pioneers from key fields will share reflections from their careers with aspiring researchers. Speakers include:

  • Takeo Kanade, U.A. and Helen Whitaker, Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, who will share their research in computer vision and robotics.
  • Tomoyuki Nishita, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, who will share his work in computer graphics and animation.
  • Steven Feiner, Professor at Columbia University and CHI Academy Member, who will discuss some of his work in human-computer interaction and virtual/augmented reality.

Kanade, Nishita and Feiner are also seasoned SIGGRAPH Asia participants, having participated in previous editions. The panelists’ advice will range from the expected (how to identify life-changing career opportunities and how to select great research questions) to the unexpected (how to deal with the intricacies of academia, including organizational politics and malicious competitors).
