With script delays holding up the reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, starring Chris Pine, Paramount Pictures has decided to move forward with STAR TREK 2 instead, reports Deadline.com. Despite having Pine locked down for James T. Kirk, Paramount is still working on a deal with director J.J. Abrams. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof have written the script. Filming is set to begin in the fall with June 29, 2012 marked for the film's release.

As for the new Ryan film, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER scribe Steve Zaillian has backed out as the writer. Paramount is now looking for a new screenwriter. Based on Tom Clancy's bestselling book series, the new film, conceived by writer Hossein Amini, is an origin story. The studio also bought Adam Cozad's script DUBAI and hired the writer to rework it as a Ryan film. Anthony Peckham then did a rewrite. The story deals with Ryan as a 23-year old Marine who is the only survivor of a helicopter crash. Jack Bender (TV's LOST) is attached to direct with Lorenzo di Bonaventura on as the producer.
