Pepper Films Expands Into New Santa Monica Space

Pepper Films has settled into its new space in Santa Monica, California. Founded by animation director Jean Perramon, technical director/compositor Nick Bates and producer Christina Cox in 2002, Pepper Films provides animation and CG production.

"After starting our company in a small space only four blocks away, we were quickly overflowing," comments Cox. "We found an office that had been occupied by a design firm. Sunny and bright, it's got the perfect combination of office and open space. It provides room for freelance artists to work in-house, and gives our employees more workspace and privacy. It is much more comfortable and can accommodate large meetings and many clients."

"Because Pepper Films is primarily a service business, the formula for success is quite simple," says Perramon. "The most important aspect of our collaboration with clients is to produce good work, so that they keep returning. At Pepper, our work has very high production value. It is quite cinematic, and has many layers. We look for artists who are very adept at problem-solving, and who have a passion for the work."

"Today's agency creative teams need their animated commercials to look more 3D, but with the character and personality of traditional 2D animation," adds Bates. "The clients' characters are icons and must be instantly identifiable with their in-store product packaging. We blend 3D and 2D with techniques we develop for each specific brand, sometimes integrating 3D parts within the 2D artists' animation. Each project seems to push these techniques further and the complexity for pre-planning every scene reaches extraordinary levels to insure both the 3D and 2D artists meet to provide a complete integration. During production, constant 2D-3D crosschecking is essential to make sure each artist is considering the others' needs without compromising their creative contribution. The final integration reaches its zenith during the final steps of composite when both worlds meet."
