Visual effects veteran Steven Quale has been hired by New Line to helm FINAL DESTINATION 5, reports VARIETY. Quale has long worked with James Cameron, having done effects on AVATAR, THE ABYSS and TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY. He directed Cameron's ALIENS OF THE DEEP and served as second unit director on AVATAR and TITANIC.

Practical Pictures' Craig Perry and Warren Zide will produce alongside Sheila Hanahan Taylor as exec producer. Eric Heisserer (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) is writing the script.

New Line hopes to have the 3-D film in theaters on Aug. 26, 2011.
