Mikey Please Animates The Jolly Dot
Hornet director Mikey Pease has a new animated short, The Jolly Dot.
The short film is made in collaboration with Dan Ojari, the lead animator on Please’s Marilyn Myller, which won the McLaren Award for Best British Animation at The Edinburgh International Film Festival. The duo decided to take the prize money to make a tribute film for legendary animator Norman McLaren, Richard Williams (who presented the award), and Ivor Cutler (whose music the piece is set to).
The short is a bromantic love letter to three cultural heroes, and celebrates Richardʼs 80th, Ivorʼs 90th and Normanʼs would-be centennial birthday.
“We choose to animate a monkey, and do the other things. Not because they are easy, but because they are hard,” said Ojari and Please. “Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills. Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept. One we are unwilling to postpone. And one we intend to win.”
