With less than seven weeks remaining before FMX 2012 begins, the 17th Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia has announced this year’s program highlights. This year's FMX audience can look forward to visual effects extravaganzas such as John Carter and presentations on blockbuster movies such as the upcoming Men in Black sequel, MIB III, in addition to brand-new animation highlights like Ice Age 4, Madagascar 3, Arthur Christmas and The Pirates! as well as presentations on the popular games series SSX and Mortal Kombat.

FMX has an illustrious guest list this year: In addition to Oscar winner Rob Legato, who gives an in-depth account of the VFX creation for Hugo, FMX 2012 is happy to announce two further confirmations by renowned Academy Award winners: VFX pioneers Doug Trumbull, who just received an Honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievement and worked as Effects Supervisor on 2001: Space Odyssey, Blade Runner or Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and four-time Technical Academy Awards winner Ray Feeney. At FMX, Trumbull provides an in-depth look into this prolific work. Together with RFX president Ray Feeney and presenter and renowned film journalist Bill Desowitz of Immersed in Movies, he will also explore how higher frame rates will improve the quality of cinematic presentation.

Moreover, audience and experts will get more than their money's worth when FMX highlights the vast field of Virtual Production. With the success of Avatar, Virtual Production exploded on the scene as a new, effective way to make movies in the digital age. Centered on the ability for filmmakers to interact with virtual worlds in real time, Virtual Production enables an iterative workflow that is blurring the boundaries between pre-production, production and post. Stay tuned for further information on the Virtual Production track, sponsored by FMX main partner Autodesk, which will cover topics from World Building and Previsualization to the Virtual Production stage on movies such as Tintin, Real Steel, Hugo, War Horse and Total Recall.

The FMX 2012 program is now online at www.fmx.de.

VFX pioneers Doug Trumbull and Ray Feeney

Director and VFX supervisor Douglas Trumbull, who has substantially shaped VFX ever since Stanley Kubrick's 1968 cult classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, has helped to create cinematic milestones such as Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind and, most recently, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. At FMX, Trumbull provides an in-depth look into this prolific work. Together with RFX president Ray Feeney and presenter and renowned film journalist Bill Desowitz of Immersed in Movies he will also explore how higher frame rates will improve the quality of cinematic presentation. While current movies like Peter Jackson's The Hobbit is being shot at 48fps and James Cameron intends to shoot his upcoming Avatar sequels at 60 fps, Trumbull is already paving the way with his Showscan Digital process of 120 fps.
