INDEPENDENCE DAY director Roland Emmerich is returning to the alien invasion genre with a new top-secret project titled THE ZONE, according to Heat Vision. The $5 million production will be a found footage affair like CLOVERFIELD. The story follows a worn-out journalist and his 20-something black cameraman as they try to record an alien onslaught.

Guillaume Tunzini wrote the screenplay and Loucas George is producing. Sony will release the flick.

Production is set to start mid-November.

Just curious--why is the race of the cameraman mentioned?
