Voice actor Tony Pope Silenced at 56

Voice actor Tony Pope, who gave voice to Goofy and the Wolf in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?, Detective Shunsaku Ban in the animated film METROPOLIS and Furby, an interactive toy that was the rage in 1998, has passed on at the age of 56. He died of complications following leg surgery Feb. 11, 2004 at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California.

Pope handled assorted voices in SHREK as well as THE JETSONS, SPIDER-MAN, S.W.A.T.KATS. COW AND CHICKEN, HOUSE OF MOUSE (Geppetto) and ZORRO. He portrayed an unseen doorman in an episode of the TV series GOLDEN GIRLS and spoke for a computer on THE FACTS OF LIFE.

Pope did the voice of the Cheshire cat and the King of Hearts in the Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland and had recently been doing voices for videogames.

He also did voice for anime production, usually under the name of Anthony Mozdy such as METROPOLIS, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM – THE MOVIE TRILOGY and REIGN: THE CONQUEROR.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Pope moved to the Los Angeles area in 1973. He is survived by his wife, Pat Lentz; children, Melissa, Alex and Marcella; a sister, Kappy Melari and his brothers, Tom, Kelly and Jay.

Services were held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, California. Donations, earmarked for the Tony Pope Memorial Fund, can be made to Los Angeles County High School for the Arts Foundation, 5151 State University Drive, Library North, Room 1034, Los Angeles, Calif. 90032.
