Experimental Animator Robert Breer Has Died
Robert Breer, the experimental animator, has died. His films dealt with concepts of variation, repetition, rhythm and motion. Over his 40 years animating, his work tackled topics of abstraction, and life and death. His films were influenced by such artists as Hans Richter, Viking Eggeling, Walter Ruttman and Fernand Léger.
After studying engineering at Stanford, he went on to train as a fine art painter while living in Paris, but took up animation in the 1950s with his first film FORM PHASES. In the 1970s, he created animation for The Children's Television Workshop's THE ELECTRIC COMPANY. His 1974 rotoscope film FUJI was selected for the National Film Registry in 2002.
