NVIDIA, Intel Offer New Solution for Windows-Based Mobile Devices

NVIDIA Corp. announced a reference design with Intel Corp. that will provide device manufacturers with a fast and easy solution for bringing powerful, media-rich handheld devices to market based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system.

This announcement comes after the two companies recently announced a cooperative effort to deliver a powerful development platform to content developers based on NVIDIA MobileMedia platform technology and Intel Corp.s newest processor family (codenamed Monahans), based on the third-generation Intel XScale microarchitecture. The two announcements contribute to the establishment of a standardized platform that will deliver a compelling and tangible improvement to the overall end-user experience of mobile multimedia services and applications.

"Next-generation devices based on the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system will have specific demands, both for application processing as well as the acceleration of the multimedia content within those applications," said Barry Evans, gm of Intel's Applications Processor Business Unit. "The Intel XScale processor family combined with the NVIDIA MobileMedia platform provides a great balance of features and power saving technologies while delivering world class digital media content at high performance levels."

The NVIDIA MobileMedia Platform is a complete development kit containing all of the hardware and software components, with examples for delivering everything from smooth digital TV and video, to incredible 3D graphics for gaming, to high-fidelity audio.
