For their November event, the Toronto Animated Image Society (TAIS) welcomes Derek Lamb, former filmmaker and executive producer of animation at the National Film Board of Canada. He will present an evening of screenings and insights into independent filmmaking. Derek Lamb is the Academy award-winning producer of EVERY CHILD, and dean of film at Harvard University. He has worked on episodes of SESAME STREET, collaborated with Edward Gorey on the PBS MYSTERY!

Mark Fleischer Named President Of Mainframe, U.S.A

Canadian computer animation studio Mainframe Entertainment, Inc has appointed Mark Fleischer president of its Los Angeles-based subsidiary, Mainframe, U.S.A. In this newly-created position, Fleischer will spearhead the expansion of the company’s presence in Los Angeles, with the goal of positioning Mainframe to more effectively pursue opportunities within Los Angeles and the U.S. Fleischer first began working with Mainframe while he was president of Fleischer Studios, Inc. in Los Angeles.

Teletoon Appoints New Prez

The Board of Directors of Teletoon has appointed veteran broadcasting executive Len Cochrane as president of the Teletoon television network, which operates 24-hour English and French animation services across Canada. Cochrane replaces John Riley, recently named president of Astral Television Networks. Cochrane served as president of The Family Channel Inc. for the past 11 years, and led that network's growth as a premium service with over 309,000 subscribers to one of the most successful television channels with over 4.3 million subscribers.

BRB Secures Partners For The Invisible Man And Sales For Nico

Spanish-based animation company BRB Internacional has secured two major European co-production partners for THE INVISIBLE MAN (26 x half hours). Italian state broadcaster RAI and French animation house Dargaud Marina are teaming up with BRB Internacional to co-produce the unique series, which is aimed at 8-12 year olds. The deal gives RAI exclusive Italian speaking rights, Dargaud Marina exclusive French speaking rights, plus some other distribution territories, with BRB Internacional and Dargaud Marina handling distribution for the rest of the world.

TV-Loonland and Nelvana, in association with KirchMedia, announced at MIPCOM the international co-production of the children’s classic, HEIDI. HEIDI will be adapted into a new and highly stylized animated feature film and television series. HEIDI, written by Swiss author Johanna Spyri, was first published in 1880. The book has been translated into over 50 languages with over 100 million copies sold worldwide.

Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) Latin America, Inc. has reached an agreement with DIRECTV Latin America, LLC (DIRECTV) for satellite distribution in Latin America of Boomerang, the 24-hour network that offers classic animated entertainment. Launched into the Latin American region in July of 2001, Boomerang continues to expand its reach in the market by adding DIRECTV's satellite distribution. Reaching more than 1.4 million direct-to-home customers, DIRECTV Latin America becomes one of the largest distributors for Boomerang in the region.

The 65-part show tells the story of a renegade alien kid, Cosnok, from the planet Gontop, who gets inside the minds of children from all over planet earth to find out what he should do about a variety of issues -- from best friends and school bullies to moving house and first love. Pixar Animation Studios executive vice president, creative and animation director John Lasseter (Toy Story, A Bug's Life) will be joined by Lee Unkrich (co-director Toy Story 2) and Pete Docter (director, Monsters, Inc.) for a discussion and demonstration of the creation of computer animated graphics, featuring clips from the soon-to-be-released Monsters, Inc. Director Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman, Proof of Life) will guide the conversation, covering the production process from beginning to end.
