Study Discloses $5.847 Billion Generated In Royalty Income In 2000

Licensing proves to be a viable and growing industry, according to the most recent study sponsored by the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA), in conjunction with the Yale School of Management and the Harvard Business School. According to the report, property and trademark owners received royalties of $5.84 billion from manufacturers who paid for the right to use trademarks, characters, logos and artwork to sell products in the United States in 2000, representing a $248 million increase (4.4%) in the last year.

BBC Show Wins 22nd Banff Rockie Award For Animation

At the 22nd Banff Rockie Awards (June 10-15, 2001), YOHO AHOY: BUZZ WITH JONES, produced by The Consortium of Gentlemen for the BBC, UK, won the Animation Program Award. Every year, as a celebration of excellence, Canada’s Banff Television Festival administers the Banff Rockie Awards competition for the world’s best television programs and Webcasts. On July 19, 2001 ASIFA-Colorado is presenting Estonian painter and animator Mati Kutt. Mati Kutt has worked in animation for over 25 years, perfecting several unique styles and techniques. His award-winning films have been shown internationally. Mati's presentation will include excerpts from his uniquely original, personal and powerful drawn, painted and puppet animation films as well as additional samples of Estonian animation. The event will take place at RMCAD at 6:30 pm.

Cinar Agrees To Pay Restitution To Telefilm Canada

CINAR Corporation announced that it has reached an agreement with Telefilm Canada to make full restitution for all investments and other financial subsidies made by Telefilm Canada in CINAR’s productions that have been decertified, or for productions for which final certification will not be granted by the Canadian Audio-visual Certification Office (CAVCO). Under the terms of the agreement, CINAR will repay Telefilm Canada approximately $2,594,000 in full reimbursement of investments and subsidies including interest.

HELL SHOW!, a critically acclaimed animated comedy series from Sextant Entertainment Group, will have its U.S. premiere on SHOWTIME NEXT, the recently launched multiplex channel which targets 18-24 year-olds. The series, which is part of Showtime’s ongoing effort to find new, high profile programming for the multiplex, will debut this fall with an option for a second season. IT’S THE MR. Stephen Arthur's experimental animated short, "Transfigured," has been selected to tour in the travelling exhibition Kinetica-3. Kinetica is a festival of abstract film and video that travels to art museums and cinematheques around the U.S. and the world. Its past incarnation, Kinetica-2, was a centennial tribute to famed animator Oskar Fischinger. "Transfigured" was produced in Vancouver, B.C., by the National Film Board of Canada. The 35mm film animates a seamless interactive flow of abstract, surrealist paintings by the late Jack Shadbolt.

Academy Award Winning Animator Lee Mishkin Passes Away

Veteran animator and instructor Lee Mishkin, who won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short for his 1970 film IS IT ALWAYS RIGHT TO BE RIGHT?, passed away on June 19, 2001. He was 74. Mishkin suffered heart failure and died in his sleep with his family at his side. He had formally retired just six weeks ago, moving to a care facility in Seattle after having spent the last seven years in Vancouver, where he developed the classical animation curriculum and taught at VanArts. The school has started the Lee Mishkin Scholarship Fund to honor the late animator.
