Nominees For 1st Internet, Cellphone & iPod Emmy Announced

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the first Emmy Award to be presented for original entertainment programming created specifically for non-traditional viewing platforms, including computers, mobile phones, iPods, PDAs and similar devices. The new Emmy Award will first be presented at the 33rd Annual Creative Arts Daytime Emmy Awards, hosted by Meredith Vieira, on April 22, 2006, at New York Citys Marriott Marquis.

The nominees are: 24: CONSPIRACY by Fox Mobile Ent.; ITS JERRYTIME! produced by Ozone Inc.; LIVE 8 ON AOL produced by America Online; MTVU STAND IN produced by MTV Networks MTVU; SOPHIE CHASE produced by CB Films Inc.; and STRANGER ADVENTURES Helen Beaumont produced by Riddle Prods.

The response to this new Emmy Award has been phenomenal, said Peter Price, president/ceo of the National Television Academy. In a little more than two months time from our call for entries to the deadline, 74 entries were submitted more than any other Emmy Award category. These represent a broad cross section of what is being done in the broadband arena, and the six nominees display outstanding use of the media, including multiple feeds, interactivity and cross-media approaches as well as entertaining video content.

Price also noted that since these media are not restricted by television dayparts, the National Television Academy considers the Daytime Emmy Awards the area of competition for all entertainment programming on broadband media, without respect to the time of day it were distributed resulting in an impressive variety of programming formats among the entries.

Judging of the entries took place over a four-day period last week by a blue ribbon panel of judges.

This will mark the first time the National Television Academy has recognized original programming first distributed on new media platforms. "Consumers have the capability of seeing television anywhere, anytime," said Price in announcing the new award in November. "And as the technology continues to develop, it will be content news, sports and entertainment programming that drive consumer demand. The National TV Academy wants to take a leadership position in encouraging and recognizing creativity in editorial content and video production for these emerging media.

The new Emmy was proposed by the Academys National Awards Committee at its October meeting, and approved by its Board of Trustees, in response to the burgeoning number of individuals and companies announcing plans to produce original programming for these media. Entries for this award must be original material made-for-broadband or made-for-mobile. These platforms include video blogs, website programs including journalistic reporting, event coverage or event analysis, mobisodes (short episodics created for mobile devices), video-on-demand and other video delivered over an IP network or platform such as wireless, broadband or VOD. Entries cannot be material originally produced for television viewing and then repurposed for the new media.

The new Emmy Award for broadband will also be presented at the 27th annual Sports Emmy Awards on May 1, 2006. Later in 2006, it will also be awarded during the News & Documentary, Business & Financial Reporting, Community and Public Service Emmy Awards ceremonies.
