Nick and Master Command Top Golden Reel Honors

Nickelodeon shows earned two Golden Reel Awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors 51st annual awards banquet Feb. 28, 2004 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles while MASTER & COMMANDER earned the Golden Reel and the Oscar the following night at the Oscars. The Golden Reel Awards acknowledge the year's best work in the various areas of sound editing.

MASTER & COMMANDER supervising sound editor Richard King led his freelance crew up to pick up the prize for Sound Effects/Foley Editing in a Feature Film (Domestic) and then was the sole acceptor the following night, accepting up the Oscar for Best Sound during the Motion Picture Academy broadcast Feb. 29 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Nickelodeon was a double-winner in the animated TV categories as THE ADVENTURES OF JIMMY NEUTRON won for Best Sound Editing in Television: Animated, usually won bySPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, which did however win the Motion Picture Sound Music award. Music editor Nicholas Carr won his third consecutive Golden Reel for SPONGEBOB music, but wasnt in the room when his award was called out, the first of the evening. He was able to collect his award backstage and get his official photograph taken with it.

Jason Stiff, director, post-production for Nick led the team from Salami Studios on stage to collect the Best Sound award. Gary Falcone and Paul Menichinik shared supervising sound editor credits with Stiff. Jeff Kettle was supervising foley editor, Gregory Cathcart was sound effects/foley editor/re-recording mixer and Michael Petake was dialogue editor. Additional crew included Sanaa Canndella, foley artist, Jeff Kettle, Mixer and Paul Menichini, sound effects designer.

FINDING NEMO and THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE split the animated feature awards. NEMO won for Best Sound Editing in Feature Film: Animated Music. The music team consisted of Bill Bernstei, music editor; Thomas Newman, composer; Armin Steiner, Thomas Vicari and Dennis Sands, Scoring mixers; and re-recording mixers Gary R. Rydstrom and Gary Summers. The TRIPLETS team, which was not on hand, included sound editors Eric De Vos, Laurent Quaglio, ADR mixer Marina Lerchs and re-recording mixers Mathieu Cox and Alek Goosse.

Fernand Bos was a double winner, picking up reels for feature film music, COLD MOUNTAIN and musical feature, A MIGHTY WIND.

Scorpio Sound and Design Music Group (dmg) in Best Sound Editing: Made for Computer Entertainment for the Atari videogame, T3: RISE OF THE MACHINES.

Hacienda Post, which usually wins for SPONGEBOB, did win for BIONICLE: MASK OF LIGHT and is busy working on the second BIONICLE, which supervising sound editor Timothy Borquez says is even harder than the first one.

The crew from SoundStorm picked up its first Golden Reel for Best Sound Editing: Special Venue awarded to TOP SPEED.

In a moving tribute, director Arthur Hiller presented Don Hall with a Career Achievement Award, who graciously accepted his award and called special attention to students of his craft as he devotes himself to teaching now at the USC School of Cinema-Television. Hall is a founding member of the MPSE and has worked on more than 90 feature films, spanning five decades (M*A*S*H, A WALK IN THE CLOUDS, YOUNG FRAKENSTEIN, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID). During his acceptance, he read from his notes that his wife of 52 years, Teddy, warned him not to thank her during his acceptance.
