New Legend Tops The US Box Office

URBAN LEGEND II: FINAL CUT just edged out the impressive release of the directors cut of THE EXORCIST to claim the top spot at the U.S. box office. The teen terror sequel, with primary visual effects by Pacific Title Digital, scared up US$8.51 million. The horror classic, THE EXORCIST, with some creepy new stop-motion animation and digital clean-up by Pacific Title Digital, made an amazing $8.18 million on only 664 screens. Adding 1,062 screens to last weeks 131, ALMOST FAMOUS jumped up to third with a gross of $6.93 million. The 1970s musical ode, with primary visual effects by Manex and Pacific Title Digital, lifted its cume to $10.15 million. Long running WHAT LIES BENEATH beat SPACE COWBOYS by a nose to finish in eighth place with a weekend ticket take of $2.19 million. DreamWorks WHAT LIES, with primary visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks, has grossed $148.4 million thus far. In ninth, Warner Bros. COWBOYS, with primary visual effects by ILM, added $2.16 million to its $85.07 million cume. Falling from sixth to land in 11th, THE CELL locked up another $1.6 million. The serial killer crime thriller, with primary visual effects by Toybox, has only imprisoned $57.43 million thus far in the U.S. SCARY MOVIE slipped back to #12, with a gross of $1.31 million. The gut slayer, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, has piled up $153.7 million. Back up one to 13th, NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS scrounged up an additional $1.23 million. The phat frolic, with primary visual effects by Double Negative Ltd., has gobbled $120 million so far in U.S. theaters. Other animated and special effects laden films finishing in the top fifty were: HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME at #21, with a gross of $647,448 and a cume of $11.96 million; THE PERFECT STORM at #22, with a gross of $520,795 and a cume of $180.1 million; X-MEN at #24, with a gross of $431,367 and a cume of $155.2 million; GLADIATOR at #26, with a gross of $408,297 and a cume of $185.6 million; BLESS THE CHILD at #27, with a gross of $306,708 and a cume of $28.62 million; CHICKEN RUN at #28, with a gross of $293,355 and a cume of $105.3 million; HOLLOW MAN at #29, with a gross of $280,168 and a cume of $72.48 million; THE PATRIOT at #30, with a gross of $278,410 and a cume of $112.8 million; MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 at #34, with a gross of $182,284 and a cume of $215.1 million; SHAFT at #35, with a gross of $173,724 and a cume of $70.11 million; GONE IN 60 SECONDS at #37, with a gross of $149,199 and a cume of $99.69 million; POKEMON THE MOVIE 2000 at #40, with a gross of $113,418 and a cume of $43.63 million; DINOSAUR at #42, with a gross of $110,451 and a cume of $136.5 million; THOMAS AND THE MAGIC RAILROAD at #48, with a gross of $70,693 and a cume of $15.88 million; and ALIEN ADVENTURE at #49, with a gross of $65,830 and a cume of $2.93 million.
