LONDON --

Visual effects house MPC received BAFTA's Special Visual Effects award on Sunday for its work on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi.

MPC provided over 110 shots in native stereo for the film including work on two massive storm sequences: the sinking of Pi’s cargo ship The Tsimtsum, and The Storm of God, the dramatic climax to Pi’s journey aboard his marooned lifeboat.

MPC VFX Supervisor Guillaume Rocheron was on stage to receive the award along with fellow nominees Bill Westenhofer (Overall VFX Supervisor), Erik-Jan De Boer (Rhythm and Hues Animation Supervisor) and Donald R. Elliot (SFX Supervisor).

Prometheus, for which MPC was lead vendor, was also nominated in the Special Visual Effects category.

The BAFTA win comes after what has been an extremely successful awards season for MPC and Life of Pi. Earlier in the month the team picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, a Critics Choice Award for Best Visual Effects and three VES Awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Effects Driven Film.

This is the second year in a row that MPC has received the award, having previously been recognized for its work on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2012.

The Swimmer, graded by MPC’s Director of Colour Grading Jean-Clement Soret, also picked up the award for Best Short Film.
