MPC Delivers VFX for Purity Ring

MPC teamed up with Caviar Director and UK Music Video Award-winner AG Rojas on a beautiful production of Montreal duo Purity Ring’s latest music video, Lofticries. An MPC team led by VFX Supervisor Benoit Mannequin and Producer Summer McCloskey handled all VFX, color grading and a number of creative shot transitions.

“Purity Ring is a great young band with a fantastic, unique sound, and we were excited to team up with a first-rate director like AG to create this visual story for them,” stated Mannequin.

The video is a series of four continuous shots, each trailing a different character as they navigate a surreal landscape. The MPC team handled several VFX tasks – duplicating rain patches and puddles to extend the shoot’s man-made waterworks into a fully immersive downpour, digitally rebuilding a floating body so that models used across multiple shoots would appear uniform, and cleaning up background logos, wires and reflections. One especially complex assignment required the MPC team to stabilize shaky camera footage by projecting the scene’s background into an artificial 3D space and recreating the progression of the scene with smoother movements.

Of all the work that MPC contributed to the project, however, VFX Supervisor Benoit Mannequin identified the development of the video’s inventive transition effects as the project’s most stimulating creative challenge. “AG wanted us to come up with an original way of transitioning between the four vignettes that would facilitate the overall narrative, stated Mannequin. “We had to find an effect that would heighten the eerie atmosphere of the video while producing a smooth and logical flow in the final edit.”
