On Thursday, November 18, 1999 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts andSciences will recognize the exceptional accomplishments of the NFB'sanimation studios on its 60th anniversary. The Academy will screen filmclips from 17 important animated films made from the time of the FilmBoard's beginnings in 1939 up to the present day and representing the workof its internationally regarded group of filmmakers. Oscar-winners andnominees such as "Neighbors" (Norman McLaren, 1952), "The Sand Castle" (CoHoedeman, 1977), "Every Child" (Eugene Fedorenko, 1979), and "The Big Snit"(Richard Condie, 1985) will illustrate the wide range of subjects,sensibilities and animation techniques that are encouraged by the studio.In addition to the film clips, host and animation expert Charles Solomonwill lead discussions with many of the key players in the NFB's colorfulhistory. These include producer Grant Munro ("Neighbours"), animatorJacques Drouin ("Mindscape"), Oscar-nominated animators Wendy Tilby("Strings," 1991), Caroline Leaf ("The Street," 1976), and Ishu Patel("Bead Game," 1977, and "Paradise," 1984), and Oscar-winner John Weldon("Special Delivery," 1978).
