Jacquelyn Martino, a renowned researcher and graduate from MIT, was recently selected to chair SIGGRAPH 2008, the 35th International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. With the theme Evolve, SIGGRAPH returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center. The conference will take place Aug. 11-15, with the exhibition occurring Aug. 12-14.
Most recently, Martino's research focused on the artist's mark as a computational device. She has just joined IBM Research, Watson and previously held positions at Microsoft, Philips Research, Columbia University, Pratt Institute and MIT.
She holds a Ph.D. in Design and Computation from MIT, where she was also selected as a Presidential Fellow, and a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute. Martino has attended SIGGRAPH since 1990 and most recently served as Ex-Student Volunteer (XSV) chair and Courses chair.
"It takes an immense amount of dedication, talent, and education to be selected as a SIGGRAPH conference chair," stated Jackie White, SIGGRAPH Conference Advisory Group chair. "We are fortunate to have found such a talented chair in Jacquelyn Martino. The experience she received at MIT was one of several significant factors in selecting her as the chair for 2008."
A SIGGRAPH conference chair works closely with the SIGGRAPH Chief Staff Exec, the Conference Advisory Group, the professional service contractors and the volunteer program chairs over approximately a four-year period. In addition to overseeing the conference, the conference chair also serves in an advisory capacity to the SIGGRAPH organization.
"SIGGRAPH is uniquely committed to science, research, education, art and filmmaking related to the computer graphics industry. I look forward to building on this 34-year tradition," stated Martino.
Martino's artwork and research have been displayed/published throughout the U.S. and Europe. Working with digital and traditional tools, Martino's art spans works on paper, installations and small-scale sculptural objects. Her interaction design research has focused on consumer applications relating to multimedia content retrieval, personalization and recommendation systems.
The 35th annual SIGGRAPH conference and exhibition is sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH, the leading professional society for computer graphics and interactive techniques.
SIGGRAPH 2008 will bring an estimated 25,000 computer graphics and interactive technology professionals from six continents to Los Angeles, California, for the industry's most respected technical and creative programs focusing on research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education and the web from Aug. 11-15 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. SIGGRAPH 2008 includes a three-day exhibition of products and services from the computer graphics and interactive marketplace from Aug. 13-15.
