Mission Mounted Atop Historic Box Office Weekend

In easily the biggest box office weekend of all time, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 rode in atop the U.S. box office charts. In the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, the motorcycle-cruising crime caper grossed a phenomenal US$70.82 million. Since opening on Wednesday, May 24, the John Woo-directed actioner has exploded forth with a $91.82 million total. Disneys DINOSAUR has already slipped to second rustling up another $32.04 million. Proving that realistic talking dinosaurs arent as attractive to moviegoers as Tom Cruise, the prehistoric profit probable pic has made $80.45 million thus far. With the debut of Jackie Chans new flick SHANGHAI NOON finishing in third, DreamWorks global GLADIATOR slipped to fourth from second. The Maximus moneymaker grossed another $17.06 million, raising its cume to $127 million. The sci-fi flick, FREQUENCY, fell to 7th place, grossing $3.62 million. The New Line time-leaper has landed at total of $35.08 million. The sub sensation U-571 docked at 8th place sinking four slots from 4th. Universals underwater adventure grossed another $3.26 million, bringing its cume to $68.95 million. Slipping out of the top ten to #11, THE FLINTSTONES VIVA ROCK VEGAS "rocked up" an additional $1.7 million, floating its total purse to $30.1 million. Warner Bros.' BATTLEFIELD EARTH crash-landed at #12 from the 6th slot. The awful alien invasion managed to suck another $1.07 million out of uninformed moviegoers, raising its cume to $20.37 million. Seeing a holiday revival, THE ROAD TO EL DORADO walked in at #22, increasing its receipts by 114%. The DreamWorks buddy road romp grabbed an additional $391,103 in gold, raising its total booty to $49.95 million. Other animated and special effects laden films finishing in the top fifty were: FINAL DESTINATION at #25, with a gross of $330,272 and a cume of $51.34 million; SNOW DAY at #27, with a gross of $319,805 and a cume of $59.46 million; ROMEO MUST DIE at #32, with a gross of $244,069 and a cume of $55.56 million; T-REX: BACK TO THE CRETACEOUS at #36, with a gross of $223,703 and a cume of $29.73 million; MISSION TO MARS at #40, with a gross of $192,327 and a cume of $59.79 million; TOY STORY 2 at #41, with a gross of $185,008 and a cume of $245.3 million; and AMERICAN BEAUTY at #43, with a gross of $170,293 and a cume of $129.9 million.
