mfive Animates Stop Motion Ad Using Real Dogs

Creative group mfive creates “Tricky Dog,” the world’s first stop-motion commercial animated using real dogs, for Russia’s Beeline.

Meet “Tricky Dog,” the world’s first stop-motion commercial animated using real dogs.

The ad was created by creative group mfive for Russian mobile operator Beeline to promote the carrier’s new options for topping up accounts directly from a user’s phone.

The entire production process took three months, beginning with a casting call for a dog phlegmatic enough to be the main hero of the ad. There were three basic parameters for the role: prettiness, smiling skills, and the “ability to lay on one’s back for a long time.” You can’t make this stuff up.

The second stage of production was the creation of a detailed animatic prototype and full animation of the skeleton comprising of 615 frames. mfive also created a set of real soil, sand, shells, twigs and other materials used to create the spot.

The final stage was the shoot: seven days of filming a dog laying on its side against a blue screen background, as well as environments with captions, bubbles, snow and icicles.
