Mercury Filmworks Opens Third Studio in Ottawa

Vancouver-based Mercury Filmworks is broadening its digital production scope in Canada with the addition of an Ottawa-based animation studio. Under the direction of former Funbag animation director Jerry Popowich (KING, UNDERGRADS, FREAKY STORIES, WATERSHIP DOWN, NEVER ENDING STORY, THE SIMPSONS, THE CRITIC, PINK PANTHER, TALES FROM THE CRYPT KEEPER), Mercury Filmworks new studio will offer design, pre-production and digital animation capabilities. This complements services offered at its award-winning Toronto and Vancouver animation, paint, compositing, 3D and post-production studios.

Im excited to welcome Jerry Popowich as our Ottawa partner, said Mercury Filmworks' president/exec producer Clint Eland. The new studio, under his creative leadership, marks a natural evolution that completes us as a total animation solution - from script to post. With the addition of Jerry and his senior team of Phil Lafrance, Christian Laroque, Dave Merrit, Julian Garner and Stefan Leblanc, well be bringing something new a creative driven studio with a consummate understanding of how the creative and technical can be made to compliment each other, said Eland.

The studios focus will be on providing outstanding client service, super-creativity, and practical production budgets that dont compromise the reliability of production values, says Jerry Popowich, partner/vp of creative production. Well do this by being a studio where pre-production and design dont struggle against the technical. Historically Ottawa has been Canadas animation capital. There is tremendous animation talent in this market and were looking forward to making Ottawa home for our new creative center, he added.

Delivering more than 250 half hours of television and feature animation to producers and broadcasters in its first five years, Mercury (www.mercuryfilmworks.com), which started as a small, three-person operation, now employs more than 160 people between its Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa studios and is the second largest USAnimation facility in North America behind Disney. The company services clients worldwide via a carrier-class fiber-optic network and a fresh suite of Web-based client services. Mercury Filmworks was selected by Warner Bros. Feature Animation to provide digital paint services for its live-action/animation feature film, LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION.
