McKellen & Serkis Sign Onto Hobbit

Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have signed on to reprise their LORD OF THE RINGS roles in Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT.

Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis have signed on to reprise their LORD OF THE RINGS roles in Peter Jackson's THE HOBBIT. The Hollywood Reporter writes that McKellen will play Gandalf the wizard in the two prequel tales. Variety reports Serkis will return in digital form as Gollum. They will join fellow RINGS alum Elijah Wood, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom. Martin Freeman (THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY) has been cast as lead Bilbo Baggins, who was played by Ian Holm in the RINGS trilogy.

Jackson, Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham are the producers, while Jackson, Walsh and Philippa Boyens penned the script. Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner are exec producing.

Production starts Feb. 14 in New Zealand with the two films hitting theaters in December 2012 and December 2013.
