MacGyver Gets Big Screen Treatment

New Line will adapt ABC adventure series MACGYVER into a film, according to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER. Raffaella De Laurentiis is producing through her Raffaella Productions with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff.

Richard Dean Anderson (later on STARGATE: ATLANTIS and SG-1) starred as the uber-resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation, who would often escape dangerous situation with ingenuity and quick engineering tricks.

After the series' run from 1985 to 1992, two telefilms with Anderson aired. The character and his prowess became a pop culture substitute for anyone trying to rig together a solution to a problem with household items.

Producers are still looking for a writer, but hope to get someone who can work into the script some of the pop culture importance of the brand, while still crafting a semi serious, fun adventure movie.

New Line's Richard Brener will oversee for the studio with Sam Brown and Walter Hamada. "We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," Brener said about their search for a writer.
