An attack on the vulnerable United States computer infrastructure on the Fourth of July begins to shut down the entire nation. The mysterious figure behind the shattering scheme has figured out every digital angle except for an old-fashioned, âanalogâ fly-in-the-ointment -- John McClane (Bruce Willis).
What New York City detective McClane thought was a crushingly routine assignment to bring in a young hacker, Matt Farrell (Justin Long), for questioning by the FBI explodes into the extraordinary, hurtling him into the wrong place at the wrong time.
With Farrellâs help, McClane slowly begins to understand the increasing chaos surrounding him. The mysterious figure behind the scheme, Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olypant), stays several moves ahead of McClane, as he implements his incredible plans, known to uber-geeks like Farrell as a âfire saleâ (as in, everything must go!). Until he threatens his daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and McClane vows Gabriel must go.
