Robinson’s Hand in Cookie Jar
A Montreal cartoonist, who spent 10+ years fighting Cinar/Cookie Jar over plagiarism, has finally won his court battle.
Cinar, sold in 2004 and relaunched as Cookie Jar, has been ordered to pay damages of $5.2M to Claude Robinson for using his cartoon series, Les aventures de Robinson Curiosite, as the basis for its series, ROBINSON SUCROE.
The CBCNews reports the settlement includes: $607K for copyright infringement, $1.7M for profits earned by Cinar and other broadcasting companies, $400K for psychological distress, $1M in exemplary damages and $1.5M for legal fees.
The ruling names Cinar founder Ronald Weinberg and affiliates that broadcast the program, including France Animation, BBC Worldwide TV, Ravensburger (RTV), McRaw Holding and several individuals linked to those companies.
Robinson launched a legal action after presenting his work to Cinar, who turned down the pitch. He later saw Cinar's ROBINSON SUCROE series and identified “extraordinary similarities.”
