World Event Prods. and Classic Media have announced that VOLTRON is returning with a new series on Nicktoons and a toyline from Mattel, reports VARIETY. World Event Prods. had been developing a feature version of the series, but has abandoned those plans to build up a buzz on TV first.

Beginning in 2011, Nicktoons will broadcast VOLTRON FORCE, a 26 episode series that follows five space explorers that drive robot lions that combine to form Voltron. The new show will have the original characters finding new members of the team.

WEP, Classic Media and Kickstart Prods. are producing, with Classic Media handling international distribution, merchandising and licensing.

No timeframe has been announced for when the new Mattel toys will arrive in stores.
