Korean D-War Descends on L.A.

Korean production company Younggu-Art Movies hopes to make a big bang in the U.S. in November with the release of its effects-laden D-WAR feature, reports VARIETY. Directed by Shim Hyung-rae with Younggu-Art Movies providing the vfx, the $145 million sci-fi flick combines Korean folklore, U.S. actors and Los Angeles locations.

The film stars Jason Behr (THE GRUDGE), Amanda Brooks (FLIGHTPLAN), Robert Foster (JACKIE BROWN), Chris Mulkey (TWIN PEAKS), Elizabeth Pena (LONE STAR), Aimee Garcia (D.E.B.S.), Craig Robinson (TVs THE OFFICE) and John Ales (THE NUTTY PROFESSOR).

The film tells the tale of a huge, snake-like creature that destroys Los Angeles in its hunt for a girl who can transform it into a dragon.

Younggu Art used a mostly U.S.-based crew for the production, including cinematographer Hubert Taczanowski.

A staff of 160 effects artists is working on the visual effects around the clock, in a renovated schoolhouse that he has transformed into one of South Korea's foremost digital effects labs.

South Korean distributor Showbox is in final talks to acquire the local and international distribution rights for the film.
