Warner Bros. has acquired Boston-based game company Turbine, reports VARIETY. The gamemaker is best known for having the game license for J.R.R. Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS novels and online gaming rights to DC Comics.

Turbine's leading online titles include LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE and ASHERON'S CALL. The company charges gamers $15 a month to play RINGS and CALL, while over 1 million users play D&D for free, purchasing extra powers and weapons.

The deal is worth $160 million and will make Turbine a new arm of Warner Bros. Interactive along with TT Games and Midway. WBI also owns a controlling stake in Rocksteady Studios.

Warner Bros. holds the console-based videogame rights to the LORD OF THE RINGS.
