Tech Crunch got the scoop that the Walt Disney Company has bought HTML5 gaming engine company Rocket Pack. The Helsinki, Finland-based start-up is developing plugin-free browser games. Rocket Pack will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Disney Interactive Media Group. Tech Crunch speculates the sale was between $10 and $20 million.

The advantage of using Rocket Pack's game engine is that games can be played on the iPad, which doesn't support the Flash plu-in. Developers can then avoid Apple's App Store, because the games work in any browser.

Rocket Pack has also developed the HTML5 game WARIMALS.
