Press Release from Hybride

Hybride, a division of Ubisoft, with the participation of Ubisoft Digital Arts, has just completed visual effect shots for Twentieth Century Fox’s latest and third release of the franchise, “Predators”. Over the course of 5 months, a total of 140 employees (89 for Hybride and 59 for UDA) delivered 470 VFX for the film, which hits North American theatres everywhere July 9, 2010.

Starring Oscar®-winner Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo and Laurence Fisburne, “Predators” follows Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet, as prey. The film is directed by Nimród Antal and is produced by Elizabeth Avellan, John Davis & Robert Rodriguez.

One of the sequences upon which Hybride worked involved creating and animating CG Predator Hounds, which are controlled by the Black Super Predators to flush out their prey in the same way a fox hunter would use hounds. The bulk of the work handled by Hybride not only comprised in creating the Hounds, but also includes shots for the sequences where the Hounds’ movements interact their environment. Hybride artists replaced real leaves and debris present during filming, by CG greenery, which interacts with the Hounds once they’ve been integrated in the scenes.

Hybride also designed various kinds of weapons in addition to producing the transitions for the Predators’ cloaking effects. Hybride completed a number of other types of effects for the film, including computer generated (CG) Ram Runners, insects, parachutes, holograms, targets, alien skies, blood, fire and residual smoke. In addition, Hybride artists completed virtual set creation & extension, and also concealed all visible cables & wires.
