In Suzanne Collins' book, America is sectioned off into 12 poor districts where a boy and girl are selected each year to participate in a televised battle to the death. Katniss (Lawrence) volunteers to take her sister's place. Peeta is the boy from her hometown that joins her and declares he loves her. Gale trains Katniss to survive the game.

For the Peeta role, the actors testing include Josh Hutcherson (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT), Alexander Ludwig (ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN), Hunter Parrish (Showtime's WEEDS), Lucas Till (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, Havok in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) and Evan Peters (KICK-ASS).

Actors testing for Gale are Liam Hemsworth (THE LAST SONG), David Henrie (TV's WIZARDS OF WAVERLY PLACE), Robbie Amell (Nickelodeon's TRUE JACKSON, VP) and Drew Roy (TV's FALLING SKIES).
