The Houdini family of 3D programs from Side Effects Software played a key role in several of the nominees at the 3rd Annual VES Awards, Feb. 16 at the Hollywood Palladium, including THE AVIATOR, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, I, ROBOT, THE POLAR EXPRESS and SPIDER-MAN 2. In fact, out of the 19 categories for visual effects in film, television, commercials, music, videos and games, 10 of the categories include major motion pictures that employ Houdini.
This year, films using Houdini software have received a great deal of industry recognition. For example, Digital Domain utilized Houdini extensively in I, ROBOT to generate visual effects, including fire, explosions and debris, as well as in THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW to create the complex weather effects such as the tidal wave, the water floods in New York City and the tornados in Los Angeles. In addition, Sony Pictures Imageworks also produced the stand out visual effects in THE AVIATOR and SPIDER-MAN 2 using Houdini to create the energy ball, the flying debris, the CG water and the web in the latter.
Production studios using Houdini to generate stunning visual effects consistently earn industry recognition each year, said Tony Cristiano, coo and vp of U.S. Operations, Side Effects Software.
