Wanted, Prince Caspian, X-Files on DVD/Blu-ray, Plus Day The Earth Stood Still
THE BEST OF DR. KATZ, PROFESSIONAL THERAPIST is a single disc and contains 18 appearances from the who's who of stand-up comedy -- Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Dave Chappelle, Margaret Cho, David Cross, David Duchovny, Susie Essman, Janeane Garofalo, Kathy Griffin, Denis Leary, Richard Lewis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kevin Nealon, Conan O'Brien, Patton Oswalt, Brian Regan, Ray Romano and Sarah Silverman. It also includes the bonus feature "Dr. Katz Remembers: His Favorite Ben and Laura Moments" in which the good Doctor gives exclusive new insights into his favorite Ben and Laura moments.
DR. KATZ ran for six seasons on Comedy Central (1995-1999) and garnered the network Peabody and CableACE Awards as well as its first Primetime Emmy Award. The show depicts the life of the psychiatrist who is routinely manipulated by everyone -- his secretary, his 20-something son who still lives at home and his bizarre patients.
The sitcom's regular characters are played by Boston-based actors Will Lebow (Stanley, Dr. Katz's best friend), Laura Silverman (Laura, the receptionist), H. Jon Benjamin (Ben, Dr. Katz's son), and Julianne Shapiro (Julie, the bartender). The sitcom features two significant production breakthroughs: a computer animation process called "Squigglevision," which involves unique animated line drawings and the use of established stand-up comedians' routines that form the dialogue in Dr. Katz' therapy sessions.
IMMORTEL (AD VITAM) On Blu-ray
New York City, year 2095. A floating pyramid has emerged in the skies above Manhattan, inhabited by ancient Egyptian Gods. They have cast judgment down upon Horus (a falcon headed god), one of their own. With only seven days to preserve his immortality, he must find a human host body to inhabit, and search for a mate. In the city below, a beautiful young woman, Jill (Linda Hardy), with blue hair, blue tears and a power even unknown to her, wanders the city in search of her identity aided by a doctor who is fascinated by this mystery of nature. Reality in this world has a whole new meaning as bodies, voices and memories converge with Gods, mutants, mortals and extra terrestrials.
Stunning visual effects meld with the poetic surrealism of comic-book creator Enki Bilal's fantastic epic story, released theatrically in Europe and Asia in 2004. A ground-breaking step into the future of film-making from First Look Pictures (vfx by Duran Duboi), now on Blu-ray.
"IMMORTEL is, without wanting to sound pretentious, the biggest special effects movie ever made in Europe," proudly boasts visual effects supervisor Jacquemin Piel of the 84-minute feature. "There are 390 shots of full CG animation, 500 shots combining live action and CG animation, plus 280 composite shots." The sheer quantity of visual effects shots was daunting in itself, but the nature of the project made it far more complicated than a "regular" effects movie requiring the same amount of shots. It had to be a Bilal movie. It had to reproduce in moving images these fantastic worlds that the director had been creating on paper for years. "It was a real artistic challenge for us," says Piel. "On a strictly technical level, the main difficulties were combining real actors with CG characters and creating completely computer-generated sequences."
