Columbia Tri-Star Home Entertainment is releasing its summer blockbuster SPIDER-MAN to DVD and home video on Friday, November 1, 2002. Given that most home video releases occur on Tuesdays, look for SPIDER-MAN to do heroic business in home video sales this weekend. SPIDER-MAN will be available in wide and full screen editions on DVD, with a host of exclusive features such as comic-to-feature comparison, a historical documentary on the character and never-before-revealed Spidey factoids. This live-action feature version of the classic Marvel comic centers on student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) who, after being bitten by a genetically altered spider, gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. As Spider-Man, Peter must use his new abilities to battle the evil Green Goblin. The two-disc SPIDER-MAN DVD set features commentary from director Sam Raimi, producer Laura Ziskin and star Kirsten Dunst; visual effects commentary with supervisor John Dykstra and the Sony Imageworks visual effects crew; a "Making Of" featurette; "Spider-Man: The Mythology of the 21st Century" historical documentary; SPIDER-MAN comic book archives; CGI tests; outtakes; and more. Also releasing on the same date is a specially-packaged limited-edition Collector's DVD Gift Set which features the widescreen special edition SPIDER-MAN DVD; a reprint of Marvel Comics' AMAZING FANTASY #15 in which SPIDER-MAN was created; an exclusive collectible drawing by former SPIDER-MAN artist John Romita, Sr. and current SPIDER-MAN artist John Romita, Jr.; and a collectible numbered film "cel" from the movie. Suggested retail price: 2-disc DVD - $28.95; Limited Edition Collector's DVD Gift Set - $49.95; VHS - $24.95.
