Harry Potter Flys To Number One

Breaking all previous box office records, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERERS STONE, with visual effects by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Rhythm & Hues, commanded the box office this weekend with an astonishing $90.3M three-day total for its first place debut. The previous three-day record holder was JURASSIC PARK: THE LOST WORLD with $72.1M. In addition, HARRY POTTER put STAR WARS: EPISODE ONE to shame, besting that films one-day total record by $5M ($28.5M for STAR WARS vs. $33.5M for HARRY). No doubt the fact that some theaters started the party early, beginning screenings at 12:01 am on Friday, November 16th, helped the film collect its record box office gross. With HARRY POTTER being the only major wide release this weekend, the films in the top ten stayed relatively the same. MONSTERS, INC. is still going strong in its third week, despite a 50% drop from its previous weekend gross. The Disney/Pixar film added $23M to its total for second place and $156.7M to date. In third place, romantic comedy SHALLOW HAL, with visual effects by Alterian Studios and Artist's Asylum Inc., collected $12.7M in its second week, for a cume of $41.3M. Action pic THE ONE, with visual effects by Digital Filmworks, ComputerCafe and others, fell to sixth, adding $4.2M bringing its three week total to $38.4M. The drama K-PAX, with primary visual effects by Centropolis Effects, LLC., slid one spot to seventh, earning $3.3M for $45.4M gross to date. Spooky thriller 13 GHOSTS, with primary visual effects by Manex Entertainment, rounds out the top ten, with $2.2M this weekend and $37.7M total. Richard Linklaters animated film, WAKING LIFE, expanded to 93 theaters and moved up to 21st place, scoring over $235,000 for the weekend giving it $1.5M after six weeks in limited release. The film is expected to enter into 32 more theaters this weekend. Box office information was obtained from yahoo.com.
